The huge short-cycle presses at Wemhöner Surface Technologies weigh several hundred tonnes. With a pressure of up to 1000 N/cm², they process wood-based materials such as laminate flooring and furniture fronts with melamine direct coating in cycles of just one second. As the market leader in the field, Wemhöner delivers its machines all over the world.
In order to ensure that the short-cycle presses work reliably, the same level of top performance is required from the panel building. For the operation of one of these systems, metre-long panel combinations need to be planned and installed, so Wemhöner is lucky to be able to rely on two experienced partners in this regard. The complex drive solutions for the presses are implemented together with panel building company Controller Steuerungstechnik and Weidmüller.

Application products for increased efficiency
“Our customers’ systems are becoming larger and larger, with increasingly complex control tasks. But this growth is not reflected in the amount of space that is available for the panels, which is often actually decreasing. The components used therefore need to be increasingly more powerful and compact,” says Michael Franke, Electrical Engineer at Controller, explaining the challenges he faces on a daily basis.
Weidmüller was already working in close partnership with Controller eight years ago, when it started addressing the question of which efficiency potentials could be tapped into from the planning to the operation of a panel. All of the processes and the usage of the panels at the end customers’ premises were analysed
and documented, with the results showing potential for value creation at all stages of the panel building process. “One of the identified customer problems that we have been working on intensively relates to having an optimal power supply for consumers in the panel,” explains Product Manager Wolfgang Weltermann. “Up until now, this was something that had to be set up by users themselves, but we have now solved this problem by developing specially adapted application products.”
Space-saving and clear
With the tailored Klippon® Connect potential distribution terminal blocks, precisely this type of application product is now being used in the panel solutions for Wemhöner short-cycle presses. Specially developed for applications where space is tight, the innovative terminal blocks allow for a particularly clear and compact control voltage distribution structure. “The new concept makes it possible to configure central potential distribution with the option of direct cabling for all of the positive and negative potentials of the various devices,” explains Alexander Wiersbowsky, Sales Engineer at Weidmüller. “The clear block solutions with PUSH IN technology and coloured pushers can be wired more quickly and easily than other terminal blocks.”
Ready to address future challenges
The fact that systems will continue to get even larger in future is confirmed by Julian Oldenburg, Electrical Engineer at Wemhöner, “The constant further development of systems involves continuing to merge production processes that would have previously been kept separate. For us, this also means more stringent requirements for the control components. We’ve found a reliable and flexible solution to this problem in the form of the application-specific terminal blocks from Weidmüller.”
The innovative Klippon® Connect terminal blocks passed the initial tests with flying colours, and from this very first project onwards, Wemhöner and Controller gave the go-ahead for their further use. Michael Franke from Controller is feeling confident about the

future, “We believe that the path taken by Weidmüller with this new application program is the right way to go. We have a long shared partnership and will continue to work closely together in the future to provide our customers with impressive, productive solutions.”
