Miniaturization of SPE connectors according to IEC 63171-2

Weidmüller has been developing user-friendly connectors for industrial use, according to IEC63171-2. With a pitch of 7.62mm the compact connector system saves up to50% space in comparison to RJ45 interfaces. The vertical arrangement of the two contacts allows a very high packing density. This enables device manufacturers to save valuable space on the PCB and to build smaller devices. This reduces port costs in device construction and effectively saves space in the control cabinet.

Originally developed for automotive applications, the aim of single pair ethernet technology was to realize the most efficient infrastructure capable of delivering high performance with as little cabling as possible. There are similar expectations within industry applications and building automation where the number of intelligent end devices in the plant is increasing but the amount of available space is not. Weidmuller SPE connector solutions deliver long cable lengths, a compact design that is simple, robust and vibration-proof, as well as being insensitive to electromagnetic influences.

Compared to four-pair Ethernet, installation is less difficult and allows a significant reduction in space and weight. SPE connectors also enable robust cabling in a short time. Weidmüller supports connector development of the IEC 63171-2 variant for the IP20 environment and the IEC 63171-5 variant for the IP67 environment, in the AWG 26 to AWG 22 range. The new connector range is freely combinable and supports end-to-end, application-independent transmission, from the workstation through the industrial cabling to the cloud.

Four SPE cabling connections (cable-sharing) can be achieved with the 4-chamber variant. The arrangement of contacts ensures ideal electrical properties. The vertically aligned contact pairs minimize interferences between the individual cables. Residual interferences are reduced by the additional shielded cross. Thanks to this ultra-compact design, four Single Pair Ethernet ports are possible in the installation space normally taken up by one RJ45 plug-in connector.
