Norms, standards and declarations of conformity

Ensuring quality and safety for PCB connectors and terminals

Safety and conformity for PCB components

Norms, standards and declarations of conformity play a decisive role in the development and certification of PCB connectors and PCB terminal blocks. They guarantee the safety, reliability and global compatibility of electrical components. Manufacturers must fulfill various requirements such as UL standards, IEC standards or RoHS conformity in order to ensure compliance with international quality and safety specifications. This page provides you with an overview of the most important norms and standards and their significance for PCB connectors and terminals.

UL approvals

Differences between UL standards for devices and components

The UL standard distinguishes between listed devices and registered components such as terminals or connectors. While devices consist of certified components and are considered end products, individual components are only registered. For components of device connection technology, such as terminal blocks and connectors, the standard UL 1059 applies. It defines safety standards, while regulated power electronics drives are subject to the UL 61800-5-1 standard.

Overview of UL approval: From the component to the production system

The table shows the procedure and the progression of UL approvals
from the component to the installation of a production system.

Components (plug connector, terminal)UL 1059: Component approval for connection technology
Product standard (PLC, frequency inverter)UL 508: Standard for industrial switchgear
UL 61800-5-1: Standard for controlled drive systems
Application standard for industrial control cabinetsUL 508A: Standard for switchgear
Factory automation for industrial control cabinetsUL 2011: Standard for factory equipment
Installation of production systemsNEC: Mandatory American safety standard for electrical installations

UL 1059: Requirements for terminal blocks and connectors

The UL 1059 standard subdivides application groups for connection technologies, i.e. for terminals and connectors,
and specifically describes the requirements for clearances and creepage distances. Industrial requirements are specified according to
“Use Group” C and/or D.
