Innovative combiner boxes for floating photovoltaic plants

Floating PV systems are perfect when it comes to finding new locations for PV plants despite today's scarcity of space. Water surfaces are particularly suitable for PV plants because of the low shading and the cooling effect of the water. However, the ambient conditions place high demands on the combiner boxes.

Our PV DC Floating Combiner Boxes are designed for use in floating PV systems on freshwater surfaces more than 1 km from the sea and equipped with central inverters. They comply with IEC-61439 (Edition 2) and can withstand high humidity, a corrosive atmosphere and exposure to strong sunlight. We offer a wide range of plug&play variants with 8 to 24 inputs – along with comprehensive protection and appropriate covering solutions.

Our combiner boxes for floating PV can reliably and sustainably withstand harsh ambient conditions.

In floating photovoltaic plants, combiner boxes need to withstand the demanding conditions caused by high humidity and direct sunlight. Our combiner boxes for floating PV are the perfect solution for long-term efficiency.

The benefits at a glance

Floating solar plants are on trend in the industry. However, if you're considering setting up a floating PV plant, you'll have a range of obstacles to overcome. On water surfaces in particular, it can be hard to maintain and service combiner boxes for PV plants. This results in high costs. When a solution fails, no power will be generated. This causes increasing electricity production costs (levelized costs of electricity/LCOE), and the entire investment in the floating PV plant can become unprofitable. As a project planner for large PV plants or a technical adviser, we're sure that you'll already be aware of these problems. Our combiner boxes for floating PV offer a range of advantages which allow you to counter the usual challenges.

Product details

Thanks to innovation and new ideas, our combiner boxes for floating PV are able to address typical concerns that arise in relation to floating PV systems. The special features of our products ensure that the combiner boxes for floating PV are able to withstand the harshest ambient conditions reliably and sustainably. Features include absorbing PMMA sun protection to protect the combiner boxes for floating PV from high temperatures and Multivia cable glands for optimum watertightness. Our products can meet all requirements.

Absorbing PMMA sun protection

The specially developed PMMA sun protection for combiner boxes for floating PV absorbs incident solar radiation and heat. Its glazed polymer surface increases the reflection index and efficiently deflects incident radiation. This effectively reduces the temperature inside the combiner box.

Ensured ventilation

An air gap between the door housing and the PMMA cover ensures constant air circulation. This means that the combiner box for floating PV and its components are reliably cooled.

Reliable sealing function

The PMMA cover is fixed to the enclosure door of the combiner box for floating PV with stainless steel blind rivets. The rivets are located outside the area of the door seal, so the sealing function as per IP65 is reliably guaranteed at all times.

Optimum water tightness

Multivia cable glands ensure optimum water tightness. They reduce the number of mechanical parts and make the entire construction of the combiner box for PV plants more robust.

Floating PV in practice

Our combiner boxes for floating PV have already enjoyed success. In the Netherlands, Floating Solar BV has created three artificial islands with the largest and most dynamic floating solar farm in Europe. They plan to increase the number of islands to fifteen in the future. Due to the harsh environmental conditions and the long desired lifetime, the used combiner boxes for floating PV must also meet the most stringent of requirements. Our range has been tested and meets all electrical safety conditions. Find out more about the floating solar photovoltaic system in the Netherlands.

Our laboratory ensures the highest product quality

Our laboratory is accredited in accordance with international standards. It operates independently and is recognized by institutions, registration services, and other agencies and authorities. As a member of the CTDP program, Weidmüller is regularly audited by UL, especially with regard to our test methods, quality management and documentation.

PV DC combiner boxes are tested according to IEC-61439-2 and are constructed on the basis of the test results as well as assembled for the specific application. This ensures that each of the requirements of the target application is fully met.

Perfect complements

The perfect complements to our combiner boxes for floating PV make your utility scale PV installations even more efficient. For example, our PV string monitoring systems can be used to collect and analyze data in order to allow you to precisely monitor your floating PV plants. Our PV AC combiner boxes are primarily designed for the requirements of large plants. They can be used to combine PV string inverters reliably and cost-effectively. Or you might like to benefit from our PV communication boxes, which you can use to connect up your floating PV plants with reliable and secure communication. More efficiency and productivity thanks to perfect complements for your floating PV plant.
