The two-tier OMNIMATE Signal connector at 3.5 mm pitch, is in the middle ground between the requirements for equipment miniaturisation and, simultaneously, increasing functionality. This plug-in system is easy to work with, despite its increased functionality being packed into a compact space. This has been achieved by the direct PUSH IN connection mechanism, the no-tool connect and release, the touch-safety of the male header, and the easily legible labelling of each clamping point.
These product features are the result of an extremely good practice-oriented development. The requirements of device manufacturers, like KEB, have flowed into the design of the connector.
Putting functional requirements into practice
Drive and control electronics is one of KEB’s core business areas. The COMBIVERT frequency converter range, with performance levels up to 900 kW, meets demanding requirements from the general mechanical and systems engineering areas. KEB also has correspondingly high requirements for device connection systems. Head of KEB's development, Bodo Broszeit, reports on the close collaboration with Weidmüller.
Firstly, it has to be the pluggability, which allows our customers to use preassembled cable harnesses. Another is the direct PUSH IN connection mechanism that is incorporated in the B2CF, which, for our customers, is in a better class than the old tension-spring solution.
KEB uses the B2CF 3.5 signal connector in all of their new device range. How did that happen?
Broszeit: All our current devices use the previous B2L model with its tension-clamp connection system. We compared several PCB terminals with the same installation density. The reason for choosing B2L was the no-tool excentre release for all number of poles. The female header proved to be good in use.
At the same time, some aspects demonstrated there was room for improvement. For example, the screwdriver connection and the small labelling. These areas of improvement were discussed with Weidmüller so that they could be incorporated into the development of the new B2CF female header. We are going to use this product across the board because not only does it fully meet our requirements, above all it meets the needs of our customers.
What are the main benefits to you that you can now pass onto your customers?
Broszeit: Firstly, it has to be the pluggability, which allows our customers to use preassembled cable harnesses. Another is the direct PUSH IN connection mechanism that is incorporated in the B2CF, which, for our customers, is in a better class than the old tension-spring solution. Our customers confirm this.
The high contact density on a small surface area and the large connection cross-section for wires up to 1.5 mm² with wire-end ferrules is another reason. Our devices are becoming more and more compact but have to have more and more functionality at the same time. The B2CF solves this apparent contradiction.
Just how important is the labelling to you?
Broszeit: Massively important! The legibility is a very important issue for us. We are very happy with the way that Weidmüller has improved the labelling on the female header by developing a larger frontal labelling area. Easy identification has now been achieved thanks to the highly legible labelling on each clamping point, clear identification of each installation position, and the black-on-white printing.
